Over the course of the game, there may be an upgrade on the results screen stating that a piece of equipment has been strengthened. How much is dependent on the weapon or shield's rank and the level achieved. To strengthen something, the unit must select for a normal attack. Performing the attack will give more EXP than only the selection. Shields will gain less EXP than the weapon as they're not always in use (60%). Other important factors in strengthening are the BR difference between the parties and the Chain count. Once the BR difference heavily favours the player, strengthening EXP drops to 0.
An important note to keep in mind is that Growth Boost Equipment that have Equipment +1 or Equipment +2 don't actually help with strengthening equipment. It either affects something else or wasn't implemented properly. Any "illegal" upgrades (a non-valid upgrade path) will result in new piece being created. This will reset the EXP earned.
Equipment be it weapons, shields, or accessories have weights or "burden". They decrease a unit's speed in turns of move order. In addition, burden of the weapon equipped on the main hand affects its accuracy for any attack that does not have 100% accuracy. The higher it is, the more inaccurate the unit's attacks will be. Whatever's equipped in the off hand has no impact on this.
