If your screen captures are coming out too dark (or too light, or even backlit), one option is to download some image editing software, such as GIMP, and use its "Levels" or "Gamma" feature to bring out the highlights in the image. This is a better option than simply increasing the brightness/contrast of the image, because this method keeps very dark and very light regions intact while adjusting the murky midtones that are usually the real problem.
